Until now the most exciting innovation in umbrellas was the addition of a button that opens and closes it so you can pretend it’s a gun. BANG! While extremely useful for pretending to be the Penguin from Batman, it still can’t protect you from sideways rain or jerks who drive into puddles to splash you. The Rain Shield by Lin Min-Wei and Liu Li-Hsiang is a completely new take on umbrellas as we know them, providing side coverage to help avoid windblown rain and splashes. When not in use it folds up into a small disk shape that can easily slipped into a bag. If this concept ever makes it to market you’ll have to choose between not getting splashed or playing with your pretend umbrella gun.
