If I was going to create (attempt to create…ok, think about creating) a self portrait, I would probably use penne, bacon gouda and all the random crap my kids drop on the floor that ends up in my pockets. Chicago artist Mary Ellen Croteau had a better vision than I did. She was reminded me of Chuck Close’s painted portraits when staring at a collection of plastic bottle caps. That inspired a large scale self-portrait made entirely of said caps. Measuring 8 feet by 7 feet, “CLOSE“ is one an amazing piece of work.
